WHAT

This research explores the growing complexity of animal air travel as a systems design problem rather

than simply a consumer inconvenience. I am particularly interested in how fragmented compliance

requirements across airlines, veterinary systems, and government regulations create stress and operational

risk for travelers.

My central research question is: How can a digital intervention reduce systemic friction in international animal air travel

compliance?

Rather than focusing on “pet travel” broadly, this research examines the absence of a structured

coordination layer between airlines, veterinary documentation, and border authorities.

WHY

Personally, this topic emerged from direct experience attempting to organise international travel with a

large dog. The process involved navigating conflicting airline policies, crate size restrictions, medical

certificate timing windows, and unclear documentation requirements. What struck me was that the animal

itself was not the difficulty — the difficulty was managing fragmented systems.

Professionally, I am interested in design as a tool for reducing friction between institutions and

individuals. Authors such as Donella Meadows (2008) discuss leverage points within systems, and I see

compliance coordination as a potential leverage point in mobility infrastructure. Service design literature

(Stickdorn et al., 2018) also emphasises visibility and orchestration across touchpoints. This research

contributes to those conversations by examining animal travel as a case study in distributed governance

and logistical complexity.

The research may also have value for airlines, veterinary clinics, and travelers who currently manage

compliance manually and reactively.

HOW

My methodology will combine:

Secondary research into airline policies, DEFRA/APHA regulations, and international import

frameworks

Case study analysis of existing digital compliance platforms (e.g., travel visa apps, digital health

passports)

Semi-structured interviews with pet owners, veterinarians, and airline staff

Prototype testing of a low-fidelity digital workflow (PetPass concept)

Ethically, interviews will be voluntary and anonymised. I will avoid collecting sensitive personal data

beyond what is necessary for research insight.

Time management will follow a phased structure:

Phase 1: literature review and stakeholder mapping

Phase 2: interviews and insight synthesis

Phase 3: prototype iteration and feedback

I will use tutorials and librarian consultations to refine sources and ensure academic grounding.

WHAT IF

If successful, this research could demonstrate that compliance complexity in animal travel is not

inevitable but structurally designable.

Positive implications include:

Reduced stress and denied boarding incidents

Improved coordination between institutions

A clearer model for digital compliance tools in other domains

However, there are risks. Over-digitisation could marginalise those without access to technology, and

inaccurate data aggregation could create liability issues.

If the aims are achieved, I would conclude the course with a tested prototype and a clearer understanding

of how design can intervene in regulatory systems. Longer term, this could extend into broader research

on digital coordination infrastructures in mobility contexts.
